A Hopeful Exploration of Care, Community and The Living Human Web in Late Capitalism
Hey. 👋🏼
I’ve spent the last few years researching, discussing, and exploring the ways we stay connected, care for each other and deal with crises in our lives.
Obviously, there’s a lot to say, but one of the surprising places this has led me to the ways in which our economic context shapes us - not just in the way we spend and work, but in the way we see ourselves.
The academic way of phrasing this is “capitalism as a social imaginary”, but if your eyes just glazed over reading that, maybe we could think of it as the stories we tell about who we are and how the world works.
Have you ever wondered why we “spend” time? Refer to employees as “human resources”? Or wondered if some friendships have become “liabilities”?
Could it be possible that our everyday use of capitalist language does more than just describe the world, but has deeply shaped how we relate to it?
Given the foundations of capitalism are rooted in competition, scarcity of resources and infinite growth, it’s worth exploring how this plays out in one of our most foundational human necessities - care.
So much more to say, but ironically, managing complex care needs for one of our kids means this project has had to take a back seat for a while - but if there are people interested, I’ll hopefully get to it soon.
Take care,
