Hi Shane. I am deeply grateful that you find my concept of “third order suffering” useful—both here and in your prior posts. You do a much better job than I do, in the book, showing what this looks like on the ground—especially in our workplaces. We are living in a strange and dangerous time. I believe it is vital that we develop narratives and ideas that help us “see” what is otherwise invisible to us. Thanks for your important contributions! Let’s find a way to have a conversation sometime, if you’re interested.

Thanks a bunch Bruce, having spent so much time with your work it's heartening to know you don't feel I'm misrepresenting it (too much)! It's been deeply transformative for me, and has sparked so many helpful conversations. You're definitely on to something.

Would absolutely love to chat sometime. Will message you.

I love my Sunday morning longer reads. This one made me tear up.

"Are we creating a world where we have time, space and energy to tend to human needs? Is there room for beauty and love?"

Church culture is endemic with the sort of bullshit you've written about and it's often the little things that tip people over the edge but they're easy to minimise as they're not big T traumas and feel hard to label as abuse. So many people come to counselling unable to cope anymore but feeling embarrassed as their experience was sensational.

And your articles aren't too long, they're nicely broken up my pics and subheadings : )

You, for one, are definitely creating a world like that Jane.

Ahaha - glad the pics help! Little prizes along the way 😆

At the same time unions are weakening here in Oz where we have a strong tradition of them.

Also, is that a picture if Elliot Smith drinking coffee (how you pictured yourself)? If so, that might be a redflag for your mental health 😄.

It is! Some days I'm Elliot, some days I'm Jack.

And yep, the union downturn is real. I have often wondered about how younger folk might have any sense of their importance and history if they aren't directly born into a family that's invested in them.

Also, the "enforcer" culture of some in Victoria at least isn't great for P.R.

The problematic culture of some unions is real. But like you say, if we know the history of them, we can see why we might need to engage rather than abandon.
