More like ‘Madman’ Smith. Can’t believe people think a 250 year old book — which was written as a defence of selfishness by a man who lived with his mum as an adult and thought humans were incapable of moral judgements and who on his deathbed was sad because he hadn’t worked more — bares any semblance of the world in 2024. What a chump. What a bunch of chumps.
Ah man, so much more to say on Smith! Both against, and surpisingly for — not so much defense of him as a person, but of the naieve and delightful assumtions his culture and theology held about the world. More soon!
'Gross Domestic Care, Gross Domestic Connection, Gross Domestic Play, Gross Domestic Rest, and Gross Domestic Daydreaming' - love how this makes me think!
In particular, the work of our very own Marilyn Waring and her book “If Women Counted” which persuaded the UN to change it’s definition of “Gross Domestic Product” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/If_Women_Counted
Yes! Thanks for this Paul — there's feminist ethics and economics all through this piece. I'm trying not to overload people with sources in the newsletters but when I get time I'll definitely be doing a further reading section for those who want to read more :)
Hopefully, it'll be a collab with readers so we don't miss gems like Marilyn Waring!
P.s. Time and energy are being carefully rationed atm, so you'll have to put up with ungood grammar and subpar illustrations that look like 90's PPT's.

Thanks Shane, keep writing and making us think about this stuff, it’s very necessary. We need more minds like yours in this world!
Thanks a bunch. Glad it's resonating :)

I'm glad! Thanks Joy :)
We need new graphs!
Look forward to chatting about it soon.
Preach it brother! This reminds me so much of the work of feminist economics. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feminist_economics
